Austal’s Henderson-based research and development team has been helping a group of year 7 pupils at Badgingarra Primary School to improve the aerodynamics and performance of their balsawood model F1 car ahead of a national competition to be held in Sydney next year.

The competition involves the design, manufacture and racing of their model F1 car to strict standards and regulations. Pupils are judged on their car’s performance, as well as how they perform as part of a team.

The Badgingarra pupils have already won their division of the state competition, and if they win the national title, they could go on to compete at an international level in Singapore.

Tony Armstrong, the head of research and development at Austal, said he was delighted to help the pupils achieve national success. “This is a great initiative and we look forward to continuing to help the pupils develop their car. We are mainly looking at improving air flow and speed, and have been extremely impressed by the skills and knowledge they have demonstrated,” said Dr Armstrong.

Allan Whittome, a teacher at Badgingarra Primary School who is co-ordinating the project said he was extremely pleased that Austal is helping the team. “We are delighted that Austal is working with our pupils for this project, due to the fact that a large part of the F1 model competition is about being able to work with industry - as well as overcoming design challenges.”
