Austal Confirms Contract for 86 metre Vehicle-Passenger Ferry

Austal Ships is pleased to announce the confirmation of a contract for an 86 metre high speed vehicle-passenger catamaran for Venezuelan ferry operator, Conferry.

Significantly, this is the customer’s second contract with Austal, with the 86 metre high speed catamaran, “Carmen Ernestina” being delivered to Conferry in June 1999.

According to Austal’s Managing Director, Bob McKinnon, the contract is reflective of a notable improvement in the fast ferry market and reinforces Austal’s position in the South American region.

“We are particularly excited by this repeat order for Conferry as it demonstrates Austal’s ability to meet the customer’s needs and provide a solution for their transportation requirements”, Mr McKinnon said.

“Conferry are delighted with the performance of their first 86 metre Auto Express catamaran and were definite in choosing Austal to construct a second vessel and expand their high speed ferry fleet.”

Fast ferry technology is essential in enabling Conferry to expand their current operation, and the introduction of this second 86 metre high speed catamaran to the Conferry fleet will enable the Venezuelan operator to tap into a more lucrative route with a higher commuter service, a goal previously unattainable through the use of conventional ferries.

The new aluminium catamaran will operate daily on the route between La Guaira and Margarita Island, a popular duty-free Caribbean island holiday destination. This new route provides tourists with a direct connection between Caracas airport and Margarita Island and also eliminates a four-hour drive for Caracas residents.

Due for delivery in July 2002, the vessel will operate at a speed of approximately 40 knots and will have the capacity to carry 800 passengers and 243 cars. Principal dimensions of the 86 metre vessel are an overall length of 86.6 metres, waterline length of 74.15 metres, moulded beam of 24.0 metres and hull draft of 3.2 metres. The propulsion package comprises 4 x Caterpillar 3618 engines, 4 x Reintjes VLJ6831 gearboxes and 4 x Kamewa 112 SII waterjets. Classification is to Germanischer Lloyd.

Conferry is Venezuela’s largest ferry operator with 40 years experience. In addition to ferry services, Conferry also has interests in hotel and medical centre operations.
